Happy Halloween!

Hallo Everyone! Kartun.com wishes everyone a Happy Halloween :)

I was talking to my friend Myou just a few hours ago when whe suddenly decided to show me her talent. Lo and behold! I was astounded by what she produced! She is a thirteen year old girl by the way way…. She gave me 2 drawings: 1 of Johann Faust VIII from Shaman King and the other, well.. just a little girl called Ami.

The 5 most neglected cartoons during the 80s

Ah… the 80′s! Who can forget those retro hairstyles and invasion of the robots from outer space? The 80′s cartoons have no doubt carved special spots in the hearts of millions of kids and adults. Notable ones are transformers, smurfs, He-man, She-ra, etc, etc….

On the other hand, there are also cartoons, good ones, which are not that popular but are screaming for attention! We, at kartun.com have come up with a list of 80′s cartoons that are worth mentioning and some reasons why they missed the ‘bright spot’.

5. Count Duckula – 1988
A vampire duck who eats broccoli sandwich and lives in a spooky castle known as Castle Duckula, together with Igor, his faithful butler and a nanny.

Reasons why Count Duckula could not get the lime light:
(i) C’mon! A vampire that eats broccoli? Please….
(ii) As a vampire, he doesn’t drink blood!
(iii) He’s cowardly and squeemish :(
(iv) He rearely uses his vampiric powers
(v) The theme song.. argh….

4. Dinosaucers – 1987
Dinosaurs vs dinosaurs! The Dinosaucers battled against the evil Tyrannos. The Dinosaucers befriended four humans and the latter became their Secret Scouts. They were originally from Reptilon, a planet far far away… Most of the characters are named after the type of dinosaurs they are based on :)

Reasons why the Dinosaucers lost to their contemporaries:
(i) Well…. being dinosaurs, they are not robots. The 80′s era belongs to the robots.
(ii) Their names are not stylish enough. They’re just puns of the dinosaur species.
(iii) Their names are hard to remember. C’mon! Would you remember Dimetro and Anklyo?

3. The Charlie Brown and Snoopy show
Despite the popularity of the comics, the cartoon was surprisingly neglected. We see Snoopy comics featured in newspapers and magazines now and then, but how many of you have actually watched the cartoon?

Reasons why the cartoon’s popularity did not match the comic’s:
(i) The animated Snoopy can’t talk.
(ii) The cartoon has no adventure, no fighting scenes. A.k.a it’s too slow!
(iii) It does not feature alien robots from outer space.

2. Snorks – 1984
What the heck is this? Snorks? Aliens? Haha.. You are perfectly normal if you don’t know what Snorks are. If you know, the name wouldn’t be mentioned here. Well, basically Snorks are a race of small, colorful, creatures that live in the Snorkland, an underwater world. They have a tube like thingy (called snorkels) on their heads, used to help them to swim through water.

Reasons why Snorks is on this list:
Personally I can’t figure out why… I love this cartoon! Maybe because it’s the lack of action and adrenaline-inducing scenes? If you know, please drop me a note :P

1. Diplodo – 1988
Dip what?! Now, do not fret! If Diplodo is even remotely familiar to you, it wouldn’t be the no. 1 here. Diplodorians are colorful creatures that look like dinosaurs, well, a cuter version anyway. There are five of them, named Bubbles, Stapler, Stickum, Scissors and Puncher after the powers that each has respectively. The Diplodo’s home, is the sister planet of Earth in a parallel dimension. They travelled to earth and befriended Peter and Jane :)

Resons why Diplodo is at the top of this list:
(i) I don’t know
(ii) We don’t know
(iii) We still don’t know
We simply love this cartoon! The Diplodorians are just so cute and adorable :)

Fascinated with Elves? Absolutely!

I’ve always been a fan of mythology. Of all the mythological creature, elves are my favourite. For those of you who do not know, elves are beings that are often pictured as handsome men and beautiful women living in the woods and underground caves. Remember Legolas from Lord of the Ring? Yah.. that’s how elves are often portrayed. The can also be immortal! Argh!! How I wish I can be too :P

Elves are often seen with sharp pointed ears and rather aristocratic looking noses. However, the English elves are very tiny and are often mischievious. Enid Blyton used a lot of elves in her story books. An of course, you can’t forget those elves that help Santa :)

Being fascinated with elves, I tried creating them in my Sims 2 game. These are my handiwork. Aren’t they marvelous?

Floe – The flower elf. Reminds me of a certain someone…

elf-4.jpg

Kadaj – The green tree elf

elf-3.jpg

Sphynx – The blue elf

elf-1.jpg

Dan – The white elf

elf-2.jpg

Finally, a she-elf – Danita, offspring of Dan

Of course, elves are also featured in anime, the most famous being Elf Princess Rane - A hilarious cartoon a treasure hunter called Go Tarakada who went to search for the Salamander treasure. He stumbled upon Rane in the forest and the series of ‘misadventures’ of the two partners thus commenced… Though the plot is haphazard, this anime is worth a watch, if you want to destress after a hard day’s work.

How to be cool and gain an entourage of fans…

Ever wonder how you can be stone-faced and yet have hundreds of girls screaming your name everywhere you go? Think of Rukawa Kaede from Slam Dunk. This man hardly opens his mouth, sleeps in class, and scorns at others. Yet, legions of female fans worship the very path he walks on. How.. just how do we get to be like him? Fear no more, let us analyse Rukawa and give you a low down on how to be… cool yet popular!

  1. Have a bushy hairstyle that spikes naturally! I know that sounds hard to achieve, but with the wonders of miracle gels and waxes in the market, it’s gonna be a piece of cake.
  2. Half close your eyes all the time! This is easy if you have small eyes… but with big eyes… hmmm… well, just close them halfway. Do not glare. Glaring will not make you cool.
  3. Pick up a sport, preferably one that draws crowds (like basketball or soccer).
  4. Ride a bicycle while listening to your mp3 with earphones, NOT headphones.
  5. Sleep in class and while riding a bicycle. But then, perhaps not!
  6. Answer questions in monosyllables.
  7. Do not smile.

The above 7 points are only guidelines. Try them at your own leisure and pleasure :)

After studying Rukawa for some time, I’ve decided to create a virtual being that resembles him (maybe a little) and test out the reactions. Here’s what I’ve created using Sims 2. What do you think? Can he be cool yet popular?

Twist serve? Dribble a ball? It's anime on sports!

Sports always sell! Everyday everywhere there are millions of people doing sports and exercising – swimming, tennis, badminton, jogging, etc. Needless to say, most anime / manga with sports as its theme are also popular. Let us take a look at some of the more famous ones:

1. Prince of Tennis
Who can ever forget those handsome tennis players that have skills that defy human ability? Can anyone in this world actually ‘Twist Serve’ or create a Tezuka zone? Hmmm… I certainly have not seen any one done that in Tennis tournaments. However, those are also the merits of this anime. Without those super power skills, our adrenaline sure won’t pump everytime we watch the series. The anime ended at 178 episodes (WOW!) but the manga is still ongoing. Producers are currently releasing the OAVs called American Team to catch up with the manga.

2. Slam Dunk
Ah.. basketball! This anime is one of my personal favourites. The manga has 24 volumes and the anime, 101 episodes. Not only was it funny, it also managed to capture the essence of basketball well. I learnt a lot about basketball from this anime and had even started to follow the NBA after watchiing Slam Dunk…

3. Dear Boys
While we are on the subject of basketball, there’s also Dear Boys. Though not as adrenaline pumping as Slam Dunk, the mangaka did manage to come up with 25 volumes.

4. Captain Tsubasa
Most of the people in this world are guilty of sitting in front of the tube to catch almost every moment of the World Cup every four years. Naturally, an anime featuring soccer is popular. Despite the dodgy artwork of the early 80s, Captain Tsubasa is still popular among soccer fans.

5. H2
From tennis to baseball… Japanese anime really covers all the sports, don’t they? Though not a fan of Mitsuru Adachi, I followed the manga series.. up to a point. It was very slow paced, and I had to wait very long for the action to happen. Despite this, the anime managed to command 41 episodes! Prior to H2, Mitsuru Adachi had another manga called Touch (101 episodes). Sad to say, H2 was not as popular as its predecessor :(

6. Others
Aside from the aforementioned five, the anime industry has tonnes of others that feature sports. Below are a list of others, well, less well known anime that feature sports:

  • Baseball – Miracle Giants Dome-kun
  • Boxing – Hajime no Ippo
  • Cycling – Over Drive
  • Soccer – Eyeshield 21
  • Swimming – Kenko Zenrakei Suieibu Umishi
  • Tennis – Ace o Nerae!
  • Volleyball – Attack No. 1, Crimson Hero
